In 1998, he ran statewide for the cabinet post of Commission of Education.

Peter returned to the practice of law with the St. Petersburg firm of Skelton, Willis & Wallace, LLP, in 2000. His wife, Helen Pruitt Wallace, is a professor of creative writing at Eckerd College.
